Phyto Universe: A Salon That’s Out of This World

Phyto Universe has found a way to make their salon all-natural literally from wall to wall. On the far left of the salon, the wall is stocked with botanically created hair-care products for all ages and types. On the far right, lies a beautiful vertical garden, which also faces its storefront on Lexington.

The company began in France with Patrick Alés, who continues to be the head of Phyto products. He created Phyto with the intent of treating hair and scalp with utmost respect; he wanted his products to be at the forefront of botanic products. Today, it continues to be a family based business, said business development coordinator Charles Ruffini.

“We have our own people that go and look at and pick ingredients. We’re not mass marketing; it’s a business that is very involved within itself,” said Ruffini.

Today, the products are sold in big distributors such as Sephora and Saks Fifth. The treatments were created with the intent of promoting hair and scalp health to help regain strength and vitality. Ruffini boasted their method, “Phyto cosmetic,” a fusion of “scientific research and plant-based ingredients.”

The appointments are personalized from the start. A scalp analysis, which magnifies the scalp 200X, is done upon the arrival to an appointment and treatment is then targeted to focus on the individual. The products are created for specific types, textures, and treatments, including those for hair that need body and help with hair loss.

“When you eat well, you want to eat products and ingredients that are of a good source. You want to know who grows it, what your ingredients are fed, and how that would pertain to the nutrients and ingredients you need to be strong and vital,” said Ruffini. “When you use good products, cosmetics, hair care products and skincare products, you take the same philosophy.”

Phyto also has skincare products created with this same mission of respect. On top of its treatments, the salon doubles as a training center for those looking to become stylists.

The atmosphere at this salon is quite different than that at others. The garden on the back wall creates a unique environment that stresses the importance of plant-based products for this company. The plant wall is one of the city’s largest, and of course, the fertilizers used are also plant-based and ecofriendly.

When created properly, natural and organic cosmetic products should keep the number of chemicals exposed to your body low. With regards to natural shampoos and conditioners, by using those without chemicals, the water that is drained will be less harmful to the water system.
