Ground up at Macy’s ‘Give Back Day’

On Tuesday, August 19th, Macy’s Inc held its 9th annual Give Back Day at Martin Luther King Jr Educational Complex in Manhattan. Over 500 volunteers were present and spent the day sorting and assembling 2700 backpacks for the students who will return in the fall, painting murals, planting bushes, mulching and installing gardens that Birds Nest Foundation donated to the school as part of The Ground Up Campaign (see our Campaigns page).

Each year Macy’s commits thousands of hours of community service to surrounding areas where employees work and live for Give Back Day.

“Macy’s prides itself on giving back to the community,” Macy’s Inc Chairman and CEO, Terry J. Lundgren says. “It is imperative that we encourage students to express themselves in the arts. Martin Luther King Jr. Educational Complex is a great community to continue this journey.”

This year, Macy’s partnered with Exploring the Arts, a New York-based non profit dedicated to transforming the lives of young people through arts education. It currently serves 3 public high schools in East Los Angeles and 14 public high schools in all five boroughs of New York City including one of the seven high schools that comprise the Martin Luther King Jr Educational Complex.

Exploring the Arts co-founder and Board President, Susan Benedetto, spoke highly of Macy’s dedication to community service, saying, “’Macy’s ‘Give Back Day’ is a great day for ETA and the schools involved in Martin Luther King Jr. Educational Complex. We are grateful for Macy’s commitment to our public schools.”
