Giving Tuesday, you can make a difference

The holiday season is known for the shopping discounts around the country. Our weekend spree starts with Black Friday and ends with Cyber Monday. We shop for our family, friends and we buy a lot of things for ourselves. But now, I would like to ask you a question – “Have you ever heard of Giving Tuesday?”

It is time to give back. Giving Tuesday is a campaign to add a new date to the national calendar. It is one powerful national day of giving, raising funds and awareness for important causes everywhere.  This online campaign was created three years ago by the 92nd Street Y, a cultural and community center in New York, with the support of a slew of partners, including entrepreneurs, philanthropists and the United Nations. According to a survey by the trade publication Non Profit Times, at least $32.3 million was donated on Giving Tuesday 2013.

Giving Tuesday has engaged 20,000 nonprofit organization partners this year. Organizers say they are surprised by the rapid growth of the movement and creativity it has sparked. For example, the Nightingale-Bamford school created a philanthropy curriculum, free to anyone who wants to use it; the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation is matching donations to Shot@Life, a vaccination effort via the UN Foundation. And also, Kia Motors America(KMA) and DonorsChoose.org today launched their annual “citizen philanthropist” empowerment campaign to raise more than $1 million to support high-need public schools across the country before the end of the year.

Why we need your support:

The Ground Up Campaign is a bold, nationwide movement to place indoor academic gardens in public schools. The academic gardens allow students to grow plants and vegetables in the classroom and to learn and participate in the process of growing food naturally to teach healthy eating habits. Since The Ground Up Campaign’s commencement in 2011, Birds Nest Foundation has donated academic gardens to 230 schools across the country, teaching a total of 13,000 students the importance of healthy eating and all natural culture. In 2014, the Ground Up Campaign provided 125 edible academic gardens for specifically Food Corps schools. The Ground Up Campaign’s current objective is to donate 1,000 academic gardens to public schools across the country. Join the Ground Up Campaign on Giving Tuesday and help us put gardens to elementary schools. Don’t hesitate to make a difference in the world.
