Celebrate International World Water Day with 10 Water Saving Tips

Water is very important resource for our daily lives. We use water in many ways at home; drinking, cooking, bathing, brushing teeth and flushing toilet. However, much of us don’t think about how much water we use and waste of water. A bigger problem is that during we wasting water, people in the other parts of the world suffer from the water shortages.

If this continues, the problem will even worse. According to statistics within 15 years, 48 countries will be unable to meet their basic water requirements and also two-thirds of the world’s population will face water scarcity by 2025. Now, it’s time to change our habit of water consumption.

March 22 each year is International World Water Day and this year, the theme for International World Water Day is ‘Water and Sustainable Development’. International World Water Day tries to remind people about the significance of fresh water and to promote sustainability for fresh water resources’ management. There are also various events that can promote awareness of water and sustainable development around the world.

With the coming of International World Water Day let me introduce some simple ways to conserve water in the home. Here are 10 water saving tips you need to check out:

 1. Check faucets and pipes for leaks

A small drip from a worn faucet washer can waste 20 gallons of water per day. Larger leaks can waste hundreds of gallons.

2. Check your toilets for leaks

Put a little food coloring in your toilet tank. If, without flushing, the color begins to appear in the bowl within 30 minutes, you have a leak that should be repaired immediately. Most replacement parts are inexpensive and easy to install.

3. Put plastic bottles or float booster in your toilet tank

Fill the bottles with sand or pebbles and put them in your toilet tank. This may save ten or more gallons of water per day. To flush properly, at least 3 gallons of water should remain in the tank so be sure to put suitable weight of bottles.

4. Take shorter showers

4 minutes shower uses about 20 to 40 gallons of water so try to get your shower time down gradually. Turning off the water and shaving or brushing your teeth in the shower can be a great way to save time and water.

5. Make good use of water

Reuse water. Put a bucket in the shower while you are waiting for the water to warm up and use the water when you water the plants or wash vegetables.

6. Turn the faucet off or add aerators while cleaning dish

Just rinse them in a stoppered sink of clean water. Adding aerators is also a good way to prevent wasting water.  Aerators can reduce the water used in a single faucet by as much as 60%. By doing so, you can rinse and clean more dishes with less water.

7. Think water when purchasing washing machine or dish washer and operating them

When purchasing a washing machine or dishwasher, consider water consumption as well as energy efficiency. You need to operate washing machine and dishwasher when they are full loads.

8. Use recycled-paper products

Products made from 100 percent recycled paper need much less water when manufacturing than do those made from virgin paper. If you need to buy paper towels, try to buy recycled products. That can reduce waste significantly.

9. Eat one more vegetarian meal a week

It takes a lot of water to grow the grain to feed the cow that produces many foods to us. Just replacing beef with vegetables for your meals a week can save much gallons of water.

10. Fridge your water

Putting a large bottle of tap water in the fridge will ensure you to use chilled water anytime you need. Waiting for the tap to run cold is waste of water and time.

There are many people in the world that are suffering for the water scarcity, nowadays. Although we think we are safe from water scarcity because we don’t experience the insufficiency of water on our daily lives, we should know that we are approaching this situation. Celebrating International World Water Day, we might reach the future we want by following these 10 tips.
